七岁的小男孩马克斯是个孤独的聋哑儿童，他只能依靠助听器才能听到微乎其微的一点儿嘈杂而模糊的声音。一天，学校组织去动物园参观，他平生第一次看见了狮子。目睹过狮子之后的马克斯，在家里画了很多狮子的画像，甚至动手缝制起了“狮子装”。他在自己的卧室模仿狮子的动作表情，像狮子一样敏捷的爬行和进食。可是却得到了父母的指责。孤独的马克斯一个人呆在黑暗的房间里，与他作伴的只有墙上的狮子画。夜晚，马克斯偷偷爬出了家，来到了动物园的狮子笼。他与凶猛的狮子相互审视，可意外发生了，马克斯的尾巴被铁丝网刮住，狮子扑面而来……他到底能否幸免于难，虎口脱险呢？
